Help our Elves bring a child home for Christmas

Hotspot1

As the national charity for sick children, WellChild provides essential support for seriously ill children, young people and their families – and they believe these children should be cared for at home wherever possible.

This Christmas you can help WellChild raise awareness of its important work. It only takes five minutes to create your WellChild Christmas Elf who will support the WellChild Nurses in their mission to get children home for Christmas.

Our nurses are Chief Elves

Hotspot2

WellChild’s dedicated team of Chief Elves work with sick children and their families across the country. They help children with complex needs return home from hospital and are vital in the prevention of frequent re-admission.

Having a child stuck in hospital is hard on the whole family, that’s why our Chief Elves are on hand to advise parents, assess care needs of the children, and provide vital support especially during times of crisis.

At any one time one WellChild Chief Elf Nurse is supporting around 25 seriously ill children and their families:

  • Getting children out of hospital so they can finally live at home
  • Specialist care tailored to the children’s needs
  • Training parents on how to use equipment such as oxygen and feeding tubes
  • Providing respite care for tired parents
  • Being there for families in crisis
  • Liaising with up to 30 health professionals for every child

Rhian is a WellChild Community Liaison Children’s Nurse and she provides vital support for seriously ill children throughout the region, enabling many families to care for their children at home after being discharged from hospital.

Help ensure seriously ill children like George are home for Christmas and throughout the year

Last Christmas, our Chief Elf WellChild Nurses enabled George to spend Christmas at home. Three year old George has short gut syndrome and has been through numerous operations.

After emergency surgery to repair his diaphragm, George’s life was hanging in the balance for the next few months and he spent nearly a whole year in hospital. When George’s health began to stabilise, Chief Elf WellChild Nurse Sue worked with the family to finally get him home from hospital with the right support in place.

This year, the family is really looking forward to Christmas with George.

“In hospital, George never really experienced Christmas – it’s so wonderful that this year he’ll really get to know what Christmas is all about. This year will be a very special Christmas for us all! We couldn’t have done it without WellChild Nurse Sue Donald. She is the sweetest, nicest person and she deserves a medal”

George’s Mum, Julie.

Our nurses are Chief Elves

WellChild’s dedicated team of Chief Elves work with sick children and their families across the country. These specialist elves not only ensure that children with complex needs can leave hospital and return home – but they are also vital in the prevention of frequent re-admission.

It’s not only the child that suffers, though. Having a child stuck in hospital is detrimental to the whole family, and that’s why our Chief Elves are also on hand to advise parents, assess and monitor the ongoing and future care needs of the children, and provide vital support – especially during times of crisis.
